3 Attributes That Applicants Should Show In Their College Application
In this video, Artie Smith, former admission officer at both Cornell and Duke Universities and current owner of Arthur Smith College Advising, discusses the 3 attributes that every applicant should demonstrate in their college application:
-
Resilience: Admissions officers admire students who have overcome obstacles and challenges. Demonstrating resilience is crucial as it indicates how well a student can handle difficulties when they are on their own in college.
-
Compassion and Empathy: Admissions officers look for examples of compassion and empathy in students’ activities or essays. Engaging in community service or sharing stories of helping others can effectively demonstrate this attribute.
-
Curiosity: Admissions officers appreciate students who exhibit curiosity and a desire to explore new things. It’s not just about being a good student but also a willingness to seek answers to questions beyond the classroom.
According to Artie, these attributes should be evident in both the Common Application essay and the activity list submitted by the student. Admissions officers assess these qualities early on, alongside a thorough analysis of the student’s transcript. While there are other essential attributes, resilience; compassion; and curiosity are particularly important it is critical to touch on these aspects in your application.
